Approved Product Claims

Each region of the world has its own regulatory agency and testing procedures (protocols) that govern what claims are allowed to be made for each product.  The US agency for surface cleaners is the EPA and they do not currently have a final testing protocol for residual antimicrobial products against broad spectrum bacteria, viruses, and SARS-CoV2.  Therefore, we are still under review for those claims in that region at this time.  We recommend you follow the guidance of your regional regulatory agencies which all suggest products be used as directed and for purposes within their approved claims.

FAQs

Does it kill viruses and bacteria?

Please reference the list of claims per geographic region on the product page for each product. Each country and global region have their own regulatory agencies or bodies and consequently our products' claims vary per region. Here in the United States the EPA is the agency that regulates surface antimicrobial products such as Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent. Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent is registered with the EPA to eliminate and continuously protect against odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew when used as directed. The EPA also asked to partner with Goldshield on developing the first-ever testing protocol for residual antimicrobial disinfectant products to be tested for their ability to eliminate viruses and broad-spectrum bacteria. The research is going really well and we will share the results when the EPA releases them. If you would like more information on independent testing regarding application on surfaces, textiles, face masks, or gloves that has been done with Goldshield please email us at info@goldshieldbrands.com and we'd be happy to share.

Does it kill COVID-19?

Please reference the list of claims per geographic region on the product page for each product. Each country and global region have their own regulatory agencies or bodies and consequently our products' claims vary per region. Here in the United States the EPA is the agency that regulates surface antimicrobial products such as Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent. Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent is registered with the EPA to eliminate and continuously protect against odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew when used as directed. Additionally, as a result of the pandemic and the emergence of contagious variants and pressure from the public and private sectors alike, the EPA has conducted a study for Residual Antimicrobial products' ability to disinfect COVID-19. This study, which included Goldshield, aims to determine what claims they will begin to allow residual antimicrobial products to make against SARS-CoV2. The study is complete and the EPA is just finalizing everything to publish the results publicly. As soon as they do we will link to them on our website. For our International customers, GS 75 has been approved in the EU for its effectiveness against SARS CoV2 the virus that causes COVID19 and in the P. R. China, it is also approved for viral efficacy.

Does Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent RTU have an odor or added artificial fragrance?

No. We are proud to be an artificial fragrance free company! This also has no odor.

How does Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent work?

Think of applying Goldshield like putting an invisible shield that bonds onto your surface (think surface or textile) for ultimate protection. Most surfaces have undetected tension (the molecules stick together in a way that creates a "solid" surface). Goldshield has a compound that eliminates that tension so the balance of the formula can bond to surfaces (becomes part of the surface). The nano-assembly of this shield creates a positively charged surface. Microbes (bacteria, mold, mildew, etc.) are all negatively charged. So, when Goldshield is applied to a surface it doesn't just kill what's on the surface but attracts new and airborne microbes like a strong magnet to the Goldshield nano-assembly and they are impaled, electrocuted, and broken down to such an extent that no part of the microbe remains viable. The last great detail is that as a biostatic layer, Goldshield also acts like strong double sided tape making it impossible for you to rub microbes off a treated surface onto your hands, recirculate them into the air, or to wipe the Goldshield off the surface with your next general cleaning. This protection can last up to 90 days per application when used as directed. For a more visual explanation please see the "Science" page of the website.

What surfaces and textiles are Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent safe to use on?

This is not a comprehensive list so, if you have questions about a substrate not listed here please email us at info@goldshieldbrands.com.

Are Goldshield products on the CDC's N List?

Goldshield disinfectant products are on the CDC's N List.

Do I have to pre-clean before applying Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent?

Preferably. You know how a band-aid gets the best seal if you clean your skin off first? Goldshield is best able to bond on a clean and completely dry surface or textile.

Is Goldshield safe for people with allergies or asthma?

Yes. In fact, many of our customer rave about their allergies improving after they started using Goldshield products.

Is Goldshield safe for use around my pets and kiddos?

The EPA has classified Goldshield as a toxicity rating of 4, which is the most benign classification, requiring only a precautionary statement: “Keep Out of Reach of Children”. However, we always recommend removing kids and pets from the room while cleaning with any product.

Does Goldshield kill mold & mildew?

Yes. Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent is registered with the EPA to eliminate and continuously protect against odor-causing bacteria and fungi such as mold, and mildew, when used as directed. It also is effective at removing and preventing the odor, discoloration and staining that can accompany mold and mildew. Depending on how old the staining is you may have to try more than once to eliminate it. For small enough items with extensive mold and mildew stains, discoloration, or odor we recommend following the "Dipping/Soaking" method for cleaning up the mess found in the "How to Use" section of this page.

Can I use a regular rag with Goldshield?

Yes, but only if you follow the Directions for Use instructions and spray the surface directly, allow the Goldshield to sit for 3 minutes, and then wipe until dry. If you spray directly onto a non-microfiber rag some of the Goldshield will bond to the rag itself and leave less to bond to the surface. We always recommend use of a microfiber cloth because it is naturally electrostatically charged - like the Goldshield formula - and therefore allows the Goldshield to fully bond to the surface instead of the rag.

Do I have to use an electrostatic sprayer to apply Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent most effectively?

No. We are proud partners with Xanigo which manufactures top-of-the-line atomizers and have done rigorous testing with Goldshield products specifically to prove their droplet size does not jeopardize the efficacy and protection that is core to Goldshield products. You can find more information about their sprayers on our "Supplies" page. Otherwise, you can always use the traditional handheld spray and wipe method outline on our bottle labels and in the "How to Use" tab of this page.

Does Goldshield leave behind any kind of film or residue?

Generally no. That is a common problem among other antimicrobial surface agents but our Goldshield scientists eliminated that issue for our formula years ago. However, if you apply too much on glass or if you apply too frequently (for example, daily) it may leave a slight whitish film. If that occurs, it's very easy to remove with warm water and a microfiber cloth or commercial window cleaners for glass.

What makes Goldshield Antimicrobial products different from other residual antimicrobial products?

Methanol - a type of alcohol - and surface penetration during the bonding process. We are not the only residually protecting antimicrobial out there but we are the only one that is fully stabilized with water instead of methanol and that achieves true surface penetration with the covalent bond. The science is so sound that Goldshield was awarded a separate patent for these specific details. Decades ago a Dow Chemical patent expired covering a formula for a residually protecting antimicrobial. A handful of companies chose to begin manufacturing and selling this product at that time. The scientists/founders at Goldshield were among them. But, where the other companies chose to use it "as is" (if it was good enough for Dow Chemical, it's good enough for us), the Goldshield scientists knew that even the smallest amount of methanol could be corrosive with time, harmful if inhaled, flammable, and combustible. They set out on a journey that would have them working with top scientists and labs such as Emory University, heads of medicine from major hospitals, and even a former Dean of Harvard Medical School to solve this problem. After years of effort they not only masterfully eliminate the methanol component from the formula, but ended up creating an even more effective formula with more effective surface penetration - all by harnessing the power of water. Since then, our team of scientists have been awarded 5 patents, have a handful of patents pending, and continue to make incredible discoveries in the world of residual antimicrobials that are sure to lead to many more safe yet powerful products for your home, hospitals, schools, and everywhere in between.

Do I need to wear protective gear when applying Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent?

No, but if you are using a commercial spray applicator we do recommend eye protection and a simple face mask so as to avoid contact with any microbes that become airborne during the application process.

What is the difference between Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent - Concentrate (GS5) and Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent - Ready-to-Use (GS75)?

Dilution. One is a Concentrate, meaning it needs to be diluted with water before using, and the other comes Ready-to-Use (RTU), meaning no dilution is necessary. The Concentrate (GS5) has a 5% liquid concentrate of the active ingredient, the balance is 94% water and 1% stabilizer. The RTU (GS75) has 0.75% of the active ingredient in 99% water. Once diluted, GS5 is equivalent to GS75.

What is the active ingredient in Goldshield's Antimicrobial Surface Agents?

The active ingredient in both products is 3 trihydroxysilylpropyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride which provides a durable, persistent, self-sanitizing action. This product has been identified by the EPA to have a toxicity rating of 4, which is the most benign classification, requiring only a precautionary statement: “Keep Out of Reach of Children”.

Is Goldshield harmful to my health or the health of students?

No. The EPA has classified Goldshield as a toxicity rating of 4, which is the most benign classification, requiring only a precautionary statement: “Keep Out of Reach of Children”.

How is Goldshield different from quaternary ammonium or bleach products?

Goldshield has a completely different killing functionality than traditional disinfectants. Most disinfectants, such as bleach or quaternary ammonium compounds encapsulate organism releasing their toxic chemicals into the organism, taking 3-10 minutes to kill and denature proteins. Goldshield has a long carbon chain, like a spike, that releases an ionic charge that destroys the cell structure, while its chemistry denatures proteins, killing the organism on contact This dual functionality is unique to Goldshield. Goldshield also forms a strong chemical bond to a surface, and will not leach off or become mobile. Disinfectants, including bleach, leave trace amounts of organics on surfaces posing respiratory risks. Goldshield will not. Even when Goldshield is on one’s skin it attaches to the skin cells through the carbohydrates and will remain durable until the cells are naturally sloughed off or effective washed with soap and water. Unlike alcohol, which actually penetrates one’s cells and gets into blood streams, Goldshield remains like a lattice covering of protection.

Has any independent research been done on Goldshield products?

Yes. There are over 65 evidence-based studies and more on-going. 4 are peer reviewed and have been published in scientific journals. 3 were published in the prestigious American Journal of Infection Control. If you would like more information about studies that have been conducted by independent labs please email us at info@goldshieldbrands.com
